Welcome to the website of Holy Trinity Church in Hepworth, a small, but (we think)
beautiful parish, tucked away in a corner of the Upper Holme Valley in West Yorkshire.
We are a small church, with, at the moment, a small website. If you can't find what
you're looking for here you will find email addresses of some kind and helpful
people who will endeavour to answer any queries you may have.
Hepworth parish covers the communities of Hepworth, Scholes and Jackson
Bridge and the various fields, farms, woods, rivers and streams in between.
As you will see from this website, we are part of the Anglican Upper Holme
Valley Team.
This website will be updated frequently. You can bookmark this site and
refer to it regularly to keep up to date with Hepworth church services and
events. We look forward to welcoming you to our church. To find out more,
come along or get in touch with either the vicar or one of the churchwardens.

The first ecclesiastical building in the Holme Valley was in the 15th century. Hepworth suffered from plagues in the 16th and 17th centuries and it is said that the Plague of London (1665) was brought here in clothing sent to relatives in Foster Place. On this occasion part of the village was saved by a barricade which cut off those afflicted.
People in Hepworth were occupied in farming or handloom weaving and with the Industrial Revolution came coal and iron ore mining and brickmaking. In the 17th century Richard Charlesworth gave land for a free school in the village. This was rebuilt in 1753 and transferred to a new site in 1884. In 1837 the Rev. Richard Collins of Kirkburton had Hepworth made into a separate parish district and in 1851 plans for a church were prepared but this was shelved in favour of a school. This was to be a Day School and Sunday School with morning and evening services on Sunday with the teachers to be practising members of the Church of England. The school was opened in 1853 and served also as a church until the arrival of the Rev. A.T. Wood who was intent on building a dedicated church. £2500 was raised and a site secured.
In 1862 Lord Dartmouth laid the foundation stone and the building was consecrated by the Bishop of Ripon on 16th July 1863. The dedication was chosen as Holy Trinity possibly because of the three villages it would serve. The Rev. Wood was "read in" as the first Incumbent on 30th January 1864.
